Visualizing the data
In 2020, we filed 302 open records requests for records of police shootings. To date, 169 departments have complied, 21 have refused, and 117 remain outstanding. We have filled in the missing data for 39 of those cities from records collected by the state attorneys general. On this page, you can see the data from the records police departments in mid-to-large cities shared with us. The panels below allow you to filter and graph some of the main pieces of information we collected.
Note: We only have the information that cities shared with us. We have done our best to verify and clean these data. Some cities are missing information because their police department (or other agency) did not provide it.
